Everything About The Internet Of Things You Need To Know

“Internet of things” (IoT) has grown exponentially over the past few years. It has become a buzzing keyword on the Internet and a common topic of conversation everywhere around the globe. Smart locks, smart cars, smart air-conditioners … yeah they all come under the “Internet of things” concept.

This concept has a huge upside potential to impact our lives and make everything around us far more easily accessible than ever. So, let’s get started, here in this article we will briefly explain you everything you need to know about in the most simplest of words and here we go.

So, Here’s What Internet of things Means…

Simply put, the concept of connecting any device to the Internet is the Internet of things or rightly called “Internet of Everything”. This means any device including cell phones, washing machines, lamps, wearable devices and any other electronic gadget in your house could be connected directly to the Internet. To enable such connectivity, devices are getting smarter and are pre-built with circuits to enable Internet connectivity. Well the other major problem that used to be around the corner was the IP Addressing issue which is long solved now with the release of the IPv6 back in 2012.

To put this entire concept more clearly, consider an example. Let’s say you will be home in half an hour and using your Android app, you turn on the air conditioner back home so that it keeps your house nice and cool by the time you reach home. This is just a small example of how easily you can manage every electronic device in your house or office with just the touch of few buttons.

How Does Internet Of Things work?

So we are here. This is the part where we can get as technical as possible and sit for days and talk about how several existing technologies and a few newer ones work together in implementing the IoT concept. But like we promised we’ll try and stay as simple as possible with our context, and if there’s anything you need to understand better or confused about do write back to us about it.

Okay, so all these smart devices use standards like the Wi-Fi, RFID, NFC, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Dash7, 6LoWPAN, the low energy bluetooth etc. which are all strong technical standards which can connect any device to the Internet. These act alongside a set of sensors onboard. They may be motion sensors, temperature sensors, light sensors or basically of any kind. Generally in a home automation system there also is a central hub that connects all these machines together and hence IoT also supports machine to machine communications.

Finally, there’s this cloud that manages all this sensory data and transfer them to your smartphones. So basically its a network of sensors attached to various electronic devices and centrally connected to the cloud. That’s how the Internet of Things concept works.

The wide range availability of broadband Internet, low cost sensors and simplified technology is helping more devices to get connected via wifi and share useful amount of data. These including several other factors has created perfect ground for the growth of IoT.

Wi-Fi Story: What’s New In This Wireless World

If you look to connect your PC, tablet and smartphone to the Internet wirelessly, Wi-Fi is the best solution. Wi-Fi has been with us for over 16 years as of 2015. And it has indeed become ubiquitous and not a day  passes without it. Businesses, homes, laboratories where-not it’s everywhere out there. In fact we have become so addicted to this technology that imaging a world without it is in itself so difficult.  It’s fast and reliable too! Today let’s look into the world of Wi-Fi and see what’s cooking and what’s not..

Wi-Fi Story: What's new with Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi Story: So Far….

According to WFA (Wi-Fi Alliance), there are over 25000 Wi-Fi certified products in the market and the growth in the IoT (Internet of Things) sector will increase this number three-fold. It means there are already billions of devices running on this technology with a lot more to come. Nowadays, almost all PCs, every laptop, tablet and smartphones support Wi-Fi and Hotspot connectivity. This technology has spanned across industries with automobile industries making the most of it to offer best services to their customers.

M0st of these Wi-Fi devices are of the 802.11n standard and the adaption rate of 802.11ac standard is high, particularly now. The best part about this standard is it offer you Gigabit speeds and since it operates in the less crowded 5 Ghz ISM band, bandwidth isn’t a problem at all. Due to this reason, there is less interference from other wireless devices and hence better throughput.

Moreover Wi-Fi technologies are also used in various fronts. Wi-Fi calling, for example is becoming more and more simplified with automatic handoffs between cellular and Wi-Fi networks. To add to this list point-to-point  connection between Wi-Fi nodes (Wi-Fi Direct) has made file transfer simpler and faster. But this is not the entire coverage, there’s lot more happing within the IEEE 802.11 standards group. Many other projects are being worked on and find out their entire story here.

What all this means to us is our beloved Wi-Fi technology will move onto new roads and penetrate into many more applications with IoT around the corner.

How To Perform An Internet Connection Speed Test Perfectly

Nowadays most of us use high-speed Internet but how fast do you think your Internet connection is? Yes, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) advertises plans with different speeds but is there any false advertising involved?

Internet connection speeds depend on a whole lot of factors and there’s always a chance you aren’t getting what you believe you are and here’s how we are going to find that out.

Performance Evaluation using Internet Connection Speed Tests

In most of the cases, the download speeds we observe while downloading a particular video or song from a website doesn’t speak anything about our Internet connection speeds.

This depends on the remote server from which you are downloading the data; a part or the entire network infrastructure itself.

At this point to actually measure your Internet connection speeds, you’ll have to act a little more scientifically.

This process won’t actually determine the services your ISP provides you but at least it would be the best possible approximation.

The ideal solution is to find a server most closer to you (one with a large amount of bandwidth) and then try to download it and upload to it.

Observing how high your download and upload speeds reach, these figures give you the last-mile connection speed between you and your ISP.

There are hence several dedicated tools available which operate exactly on this basis. One gold standard for this purpose is the speedtest.net and there are several other websites from vendors like AT&T offering their own speed test applications.

Internet connection speed: speed test

But like with many other simpler things, sometimes we do it all wrong. Here are things we need to remember while performing our next speed test.

#1. No other applications running with the speed test application. No active downloads not even simple web browsing on your device or any other device running on this internet connection across the house.

Simply, because of how these tests are designed there should be no other devices eating up data packets on this connection or the numbers will be low (shockingly low).

Even on your smartphones ensure there’s nothing playing around in the background. All this is to ensure you get numbers closer to reality without any flaws.

#2. Once is not sufficient. Unfortunately, a single measurement isn’t sufficient. If you go on measuring at different times in the day, you’ll notice similarities very soon.

This is because the internet connection line you get to your home is a tapping from the main service line and the number of users on this line determines speeds at any time in the day.

If you are using some wireless client to connect to the internet, the scenario isn’t all different. The speeds you can achieve depend on the active devices eating up those radio waves around you. This is the main reason your WiFi speeds are always lower than expected.

In this article, we discuss the various advantages and disadvantages associated with several online transaction processing systems.

Online transaction processing systems (Advantages)

  1. Easy and best solution for online shoppers.
  2. These systems are most efficient and have excellent response times.
  3. Very easy to use; as simple as fill a form and the rest will be taken care of by the web and database servers.
  4. Online banking is completely based on online transaction processing systems.
  5. Credit cards are also well-handled by these systems.
  6. You can access anything on the web and choose to buy it because all financial transactions methods are supported by these systems.

Online processing systems (Disadvantages)

  1. At times, there occur millions and millions of requests at a time which gets difficult to handle.
  2. During purchases even if the servers hang for few seconds a large number of transactions get affected, in turn affecting the organizations’ reputation.
  3. Databases store all user data and account information, if these servers are hacked, it could lead to financial and personal problems (thefts).
  4. In the case of hardware failures of the online transaction processing systems, visitors of the website get in trouble and their online transactions get affected.
  5. Electricity problem is another issue, i.e., if there is a shortage in electric supply additional backup facilities like generators and related hardware, is a must.
  6. Online transaction processing involves a lot of staff working in groups to maintain inventory.
  7. These online transaction systems impose processing costs on the buyers and sellers as well.
  8. These systems do not have efficient methods of transferring products to buyers by themselves. That’s where the e-commerce websites come in.
  9. The fundamental of operation of online transaction systems is atomicity. Atomicity ensures that if any step fails in the process of the transaction, the entire transaction must fail, due to which the same steps have to be repeated again and again while filling forms which causes dissatisfaction among buyers.

Bitcoin: Everything You Need To Know About Cryptocurrency

Though the BitCoin technology was unleashed on the Internet in around 2008, it only gained importance five years later when developers, investors, and entrepreneurs sensed its potential.

As Forbes quotes, more than 76% people using the Internet have no clue what a BitCoin is and why and how it could succeed in dethroning the other cryptocurrency. So, through this article, we help you understand everything you need to know about BitCoins.

#1 What is a BitCoin?

Bitcoin is the new currency, or simply cryptocurrency – the currency of the future. It was invented by Satoshi Nakamoto way back in 2008 and was released on the world’s wide web in 2009.

The fact that makes BitCoins different from any other currency is that these transactions are made without any middlemen.

Meaning, there is whatsoever no involvement of the banks in these transactions and that means no transaction fee.

You no longer will have to verify your identity or even provide your real name, you can simply do buy and sell what you want to without any extravaganza.

With many technological companies and MNCs showing interest, more and more merchants have started accepting BitCoins.

#2 Why use Bitcoins?

Like mentioned Bitcoins lately, can be used to buy any merchandise anonymously over the internet. Plus, since these BitCoins are not tied to any country, international payments are easier and cheaper than ever,

Also since the value of BitCoin changes based on a multitude of factors like these listed by Investopedia, some people buy them as an investment and hope their value goes up someday.

#3 How can you get BitCoins?

Lately, it’s no longer difficult to get BitCoins. There are several means you can get BitCoins. These include:

Mining:

One feature that is so specific with BitCoins is that you can “mine” your own BitCoins using a computer. Simply all your computer has to do is solve highly complex math puzzles.

Well that being said, with each BitCoin mined, the difficulty level raises and very soon your computer works on these puzzles for days drawing in large amounts of current.

This is the only method in which BitCoins are created. And as of now, a winner wins up to 25 BitCoins every 10minutes. [FYI: There can only be a total of 21million BitCoins mined].

BitCoin Exchanges:

The main bottleneck with mining is it eats away a whole lot of your computational resources, and due to this reason rigs are especially available for mining purpose.

One alternative to mining is BitCoin Exchange. There are several marketplaces called “bitcoin exchanges”, which allow people to buy or sell bitcoins using different currencies. One such largest and trusted bitcoin exchange is the Mt. Gox.

BitCoin Transfers:

Just like the existing digital cash transfers, one can send BitCoins to anyone simply using a mobile app or a computer. With each day passing by, it could get easier than online cash transfers.

#4 How To Retain a BitCoin?

BitCoins are stored on the hard drive or the cloud in a Digital Wallet similar to the Apple Pay. This wallet is a virtual bank account that allows users to send or receive BitCoins.

Protected with software which provides security and encryption, these digital wallets hold the entire transaction data. One can pay for goods from BitCoin accepting merchants or save money in these digital wallets.

#5 What’s the future like for BitCoins?

Bitcoin (and cryptocurrency) is already changing the way people deal with payments on the Internet. Although BitCoins remain mysterious and confusing to many, there are signs of BitCoin gaining more legitimacy and acceptance than before.

And with entrepreneurs and investors joining the game, the future well and truly is the future of cryptocurrency giant – BitCoin.
